Finding the right balance between work, creative pursuits, and fatherhood is an ongoing journey that teaches us valuable lessons in growth and adaptability.
Creating Environment
A week has passed since my Adobe Animate workshop, and while the buzz of that success still lingers, the studio is already gearing up for another big event. This upcoming event is a significant opportunity for us to showcase our work and potentially attract investors, and stakeholders, or even just grow our audience. We're pulling out all the stops, and preparing animation reels and comic previews to capture the imagination of everyone in attendance.
But amidst all the hustle and deadlines, life continues to demand balance. This past week has been particularly challenging, not only with client projects and marketing preparations but also with personal matters. My daughter, my greatest source of joy and inspiration, fell sick with an allergic cold and high fever. She missed several days of school and was behind in her lessons. Despite my packed schedule, I knew my most important task was to be there for her, to help her recover and catch up.
Exploring the Issue.
As I sat down with my daughter to help her with her studies, we relied on the learning packets provided by her school. But there was a hiccup—several pictures from the PDF weren’t loading, leaving parts of her lesson incomplete.
She looked at the blank spaces on the screen and said, "Daddy, the pictures are still loading." I laughed, explaining that it wasn’t a website but a static file. It struck me, though, how quickly she had absorbed the idea of technology—her ability to make connections between her daily experiences and the tools we use was astounding for her age.
This moment made me pause. It highlighted a universal truth: kids, like adults, are shaped by what they are exposed to. Whether it’s learning through hands-on experiences, watching how we work, or simply interacting with the tools around them, they absorb everything like sponges. And in that moment, I realized how important it is for us, as creatives and parents, to carefully curate what we expose ourselves and our loved ones to.
Much like my daughter’s missing images, our professional lives can feel incomplete or challenging when certain “pieces” of the puzzle aren’t loading correctly. Whether it’s technical setbacks, client expectations, or the sheer weight of balancing work and life, we often find ourselves staring at gaps in our plans, trying to fill them in.
Discovering a Resolution
Helping my daughter catch up on her studies reminded me of a valuable lesson that applies not just to parenting but also to creative work and entrepreneurship: adaptability and presence are essential.
Here are some practical tips, derived from my personal experience, on how to navigate the gaps in your own life or work and find success:
Balance Work and Personal Life
It’s tempting to throw yourself entirely into your work, especially when big opportunities like events or investor pitches are on the horizon. However, remember that your personal life is your anchor.
Set clear boundaries. When my daughter was sick, I adjusted my schedule to give her the attention she needed while still hitting my studio deadlines.
Embrace Challenges as Learning Opportunities The missing images in her school PDF could have been a frustrating hurdle, but instead, it became a teaching moment for both of us. Similarly, in work, approach setbacks with curiosity rather than frustration.
For instance, if an animation project hits a technical snag, use it as an opportunity to discover a new technique or workflow improvement.
Curate Your Environment Just like my daughter absorbs what she’s exposed to, the same goes for us. Surround yourself with inspiration—whether that’s through books, art, or creative peers.
For me, teaching workshops like Adobe Animate isn’t just about sharing knowledge; it also re-energizes my creativity and reminds me why I fell in love with animation in the first place.
Be Adaptable Life and work rarely go as planned. Be willing to pivot. If a PDF doesn’t load properly, find another way to explain the concept. If a client project changes direction mid-way, embrace the challenge of finding new solutions.
This adaptability will not only make you more effective but also more resilient in the face of challenges.
Involve Others in Your Growth Whether it’s teaching my daughter or leading a workshop, I’ve learned that sharing knowledge is a two-way street. Teaching others not only helps them grow but also sharpens their skills and perspectives.
Reflections
The moments we spend solving problems, big or small, are what define our growth as individuals and professionals. Whether it’s helping my daughter recover from illness and catch up on schoolwork or preparing for a high-stakes studio event, I’ve learned that balancing priorities and staying adaptable is key.
And just like my daughter thought the images were “still loading,” life often feels that way too—unfinished, waiting for the next step to reveal itself. But instead of waiting passively, it’s up to us to fill in the gaps, adapt, and move forward.
As creatives, parents, and professionals, we’re all juggling different roles and responsibilities. But when we approach challenges with humor, patience, and a willingness to learn, we can turn even the toughest moments into opportunities for growth.
It's time to jump in!
