The Importance of Alone Time and Hobbies for Artists and Parents

“Creativity needs room to breathe. Take the time to nourish yourself so you can inspire the world.”
When life throws you into the whirlwind of adulting, parenting, and the hustle to make ends meet, it’s easy to lose sight of yourself.
As a husband, father, and artist, I’ve often found myself caught in the debate of how a married man’s alone time precious moments with his hobbies becomes an almost mythical luxury.
It’s true, isn’t it? Life, with all its responsibilities, often leaves us gasping for a moment of clarity, peace, and self expression.
But this weekend reminded me of why carving out time for yourself, especially as a creative, isn’t just a luxury it’s a lifeline.
The Problem We All Face
The past few years have been a test of resilience for many of us. Parenting and providing for a family isn’t just about meeting physical needs it’s about being mentally and emotionally present too. But how can we pour from an empty cup?
As men, there’s an unspoken expectation to soldier through life’s struggles without pause. We’re supposed to be strong, always ready, always solving problems.
Yet, beneath that exterior, the battles we fight often leave us drained, with little time to nurture our own well being.
I’ve felt it personally the grind of responsibilities slowly chipping away at my creativity and inspiration. Without moments of pause, it’s easy to spiral into burnout, frustration, or even self doubt.
And for artists, whose work relies on emotional and mental clarity, this lack of balance can be detrimental.
Reclaiming Your Time
The solution, I’ve found, is simple in theory but challenging in practice: you must make time for yourself.
Whether it’s a few hours to immerse yourself in a hobby, reflect on life, or simply escape from the noise, these moments are vital for your mental health and creativity.
For me, it’s been about rediscovering the joy of storytelling and animation. This weekend, I had the chance to unwind and watch the premiere of Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2. Let me tell you, I was blown away the stunning visuals, fluid animation, deeply fleshed out characters, and godlike action sequences left me in awe.
What struck me the most was the craftsmanship behind it. As an artist, I know the labor, passion, and relentless pursuit of perfection that goes into creating something of that caliber. It reminded me of an important lesson: great things take time. That’s true for both art and life.
The hours spent watching Castlevania weren’t just entertainment they were inspiration. Those moments recharged my creative spirit and reignited my passion for storytelling.
And in turn, I was able to return to my family and work with renewed energy and clarity.
Tips for Artists (and Parents) to Protect Their Alone Time
If you’re reading this and feeling the weight of life’s responsibilities, here are some tips I’ve learned for making the most of your hobbies and reclaiming your creativity:
Schedule Your Alone Time
Treat your personal time as sacred. Block off a couple of hours a week and dedicate it to doing something you love. Whether it’s drawing, gaming, or watching a show, protect that time fiercely.
Communicate with Your Loved Ones
Let your family know why this time is important to you. Explain that it helps you reset and return as a better partner, parent, or friend.
Find Inspiration in Unexpected Places
Sometimes inspiration comes from the simplest things a show, a game, or even a conversation. Keep an open mind and allow yourself to be inspired by the world around you.
Don’t Feel Guilty for Taking a Break
Rest is productive. You can’t pour creativity or energy into your work if you’re running on empty. Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish it’s necessary.
Recognize and Toast to Every Small Victory
Whether it’s finishing a sketch, watching a show that inspires you, or simply getting through a tough week, acknowledge those victories. They matter.
Honor the Journey
As an artist, a father, and a husband, I’ve come to realize that finding balance isn’t about being perfect it’s about being intentional.
Life is chaotic, and time will always feel like it’s slipping away, but that’s what makes these small, personal moments so important.
Watching Castlevania: Nocturne this weekend reminded me of why I fell in love with storytelling and art in the first place.
It showed me that taking time for yourself, even in life’s demands, can lead to incredible breakthroughs not just in creativity, but in life itself.
So here’s to all of us navigating this beautiful mess of life. Let’s take the time to pause, recharge, and keep creating because the world needs your art, your ideas, and your passion.
And remember: great things take time. So does greatness within yourself.
