Make Your Bed, Make Your Art

How Small Habits Build Creative Resilience

Making bed is the best way to start your day!

"Small habits are not small victories—they are proof that even in chaos, you can choose to create, to finish, and to begin again."

Setting the Stage

When I was a kid, I read somewhere that the best way to start your day and boost productivity is to make your bed.

Of course, as a kid, I didn’t care about productivity.

The only reason I made my bed was because my mom would scream every morning:

“Get up! Make your bed or you’ll be late for school!”

So really, fear of my mom’s wrath—not self-discipline—was my motivation. (hehe)

But here’s the thing: I didn’t realize the true meaning of that small habit until much later in life—when I became a parent and an artist building a business of my own.

The Real Lesson Behind the Bed

Making your bed isn’t just about tidiness. It’s about starting with a win, no matter how small.

When you’re an artist, freelancer, or entrepreneur, it’s easy to drown in unfinished projects, missed opportunities, or even crippling creative doubt.

Add to that the noise of a broken system—corruption, protests, rising taxes, AI replacing jobs—and the world feels too overwhelming to even start.

That’s where the simple act of “making your bed” comes in.

It’s not just about folding sheets.

It’s about reclaiming a sense of control.

It’s about telling yourself: I can finish something. I can set the tone of my day. I can move forward—even if the world is on fire.

Now that I have my own family, that routine has even more meaning.

My five-year-old loves rushing into my room, nagging me to play, and helping me make the bed.

And honestly? That little ritual does more than tidy up the room.

It reminds me why I fight through the struggles of freelancing and building stories: for her future, and for the hope that art and family keep alive.

Building Art (and Life) One Habit at a Time

So what’s the takeaway?

As artists, it’s not always about waiting for big inspiration or massive breakthroughs.

It’s about small, consistent habits that fuel resilience and creativity.

Here are a few artist tips I’ve learned:

  • Start with a small win – Make your bed, sketch one doodle, write one line. It compounds.

  • Turn routines into rituals – When you repeat a habit with intention, it becomes your foundation.

  • Anchor your art to your “why” – For me, it’s my daughter. Find your deeper reason—it’ll keep you moving when everything else feels grim.

  • Don’t underestimate “small beginnings” – Even the tiniest act can ripple into a life-changing habit.

In a world where corruption, AI threats, and unfair systems drag people down, these small acts of discipline and hope are what keep us standing.

And sometimes, making your bed isn’t just about order—it’s about building the mental and emotional strength you’ll need to keep creating, keep fighting, and keep dreaming.

Because if you can make your bed, maybe you can also make your art.

And if you can make your art, you can help reshape your world.

Call to Action

Start your day with one small creative win.

Whether it’s making your bed, doodling in a sketchpad, or writing one sentence—stack those small habits.

Over time, they’ll build the resilience and courage you need to face both art and life.
